The 2026 International Conference on Urban Renewal convened in Wuhan on the 12th, gathering experts, scholars, and corporate representatives from Canada, Italy, Estonia, the UK, France, and other nations. Participants engaged in dialogue on cutting-edge concepts and practical experiences in urban renewal to identify opportunities for cooperation.

Themed "Timber Renewal, Shared Vision in Jiangcheng," the event was co-organized by Linchuang China, the Foreign Affairs Office of the Hubei Provincial Government, and the Hubei Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

Since 2021, Hubei and relevant Canadian partners have established a collaborative platform focused on sustainable architecture and low-carbon development, using timber structures as the entry point. Cooperation has expanded from high-level dialogues to deep technical and industrial alignment, covering areas such as carbon sink enhancement, sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and ecological development.
In recent years, a series of benchmark projects integrating modern timber technology, green low-carbon concepts, and regional cultural characteristics have been completed in Wuhan, Enshi, and elsewhere. These projects serve diverse scenarios including public buildings, municipal facilities, urban renewal, and ecological civilization.
"Hubei's urban renewal is currently at a critical stage of comprehensive advancement," stated Liu Zhen, Deputy Director of the Hubei Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. He noted that modern timber structures are emerging as a vital green solution for urban renewal. Prefabricated timber buildings are particularly well-suited for the "embroidery" and "patchwork" style micro-renovations required in updating existing urban fabrics, offering broad application prospects.
It is reported that during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period (2026–2030), the number of urban renewal projects in Hubei's housing and construction sector is expected to double compared to the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. Zhang Xiaomei, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Hubei Provincial Government, remarked that Hubei's urban development is shifting from large-scale incremental expansion to a phase of improving the quality and efficiency of existing stock through endogenous growth. She expressed hope to draw on advanced concepts, technologies, and models from countries like Canada in urban planning and energy-efficient building, aiming to attract more landmark urban renewal and green building projects to Hubei and promote them nationwide.
